Jenny talked to a discussion with Frances. She has been meeting nurses across the sector and recognises the ‘complete disconnect.’ Jenny expressed disappointment at the fact that many nurses cannot speak up based on current constraints. Disappointing that the profession cannot be given ‘heads-up’ on issues arising as in the past. | ||
| New Graduate Employment Sandy alerted to the media re: delay in job offers for New Graduate nurses to 28 November. Acknowledged that delay was because additional positions were available and things needed to be re-juggled. While credit to HNZ nurse team for working to get increased, however communicating the delay as new graduates are sitting state was unfortunate. | Nil |
| Primary Health Care Group – Nursing, Māori and Pacific representation. Some NFT have received acknowledgement of emails asking about nursing representation. Jenny and Helen have talked with the chair of the PHCG. Have been told ‘nursing will be sorted.’ Concern that Māori and Pacific omitted. Concern at the lack of understanding of the NP role – Helen spoke for 30 minutes to explain. Labour has not responded directly. Jenny was given access through contacts and explained the disappointment about the Medicard and missed opportunity to describe as health care provider, which allowed a consumer to access a NP, not just a GP. Discussion about who NFT will support to be nursing nominations. Plan to put two names forward, in line with our partnership approach. Kate Norris [Well South] suggested by Catherine and Margareth Broodkoorn. Seeking strong, brave, articulate strong nurses who can be confident. | Catherine to talk with Kate Norris Josephine to talk with Margareth |
| Acknowledgement of Gary Payinda Andrew alerted of Gary’s nomination for Labour. Gary is ED specialist in Whangarei. Articulate and rational. | Jenny to email Gary, to congratulate and advise of our group |
| Puberty Blockers Andrew alerted to the letter Stephen Franks sent to several people who had expressed concern about the proposed changes to healthcare for transgender people. The letter was threatening, especially to the nurses. A complaint was made to the Law Society. Complainants are seeking to have the decision made public. | Andrew to talk with Jill, whose son works for Open Justice NZNO Rainbow Special Interest Group also speaking out |
| Nursing Voice Andrew explained about talking with Margo White [Media Room] and Judy Yates [UoA] about support to write items for the media e.g. commentary and Op Eds. Important experienced contacts. | Jenny and Andrew to write eight hundred words and to get support from Margot and Judy |
| Meeting of NFT Group [Jan-Feb] Jill talked to availability of room for a meeting at end of January / early February. Plan to identify four dates and do Doodle Poll of the group for meeting in Wellington. Jenny explained purpose of the meeting. Frances had talked with Jenny about the need to be strategic and plan a key approach for 2026. Important year as its election year, key decisions to be made by NCNZ after various consultations in 2025. | Jos to get assistance with Doodle Poll and get feedback of agreed date to meet. |
| NCNZ consultation -progress No feedback as yet from consultations on Nursing Education, Prescribing. Consultation on Code of Conduct will be January 2026. First meeting of new Board will be November and then again in February. Relying on Frances and Sharon to ask the right questions. Need to keep in contact and updated. Wendy and Sandy talked about a discussion they had regarding the Scope of Practice, suggestion that prescribing feedback was ‘supported’.
