Taskforce Meeting 10 Oct 2025; 9.30-10.30

Present: Jos, Wendy, Kate, Catherine, Sandra, Jenny, Nicolette, Andrew, Sue

NP scope & education standards consultation – closes 5pm Friday 24 October 2025

Literature review, international context, and submission form included on this page.

View consultation in context of:

  • Regulatory bill & de-regulation (following Australian system)

  • Physicians associates

  • RN prescribing

  • Review of undergrad nurse education – clinical hours/simulation

  • PG education increasingly online and with reduced study days available (due to reduced funding from HNZ)

  • International standards of training and education for NPs – see especially US and Canada

  • Changes in NP candidate cohorts

Note – Jill Wilkinson met with Tū Ora Compass yesterday; Nicci & UoA today (separate meetings).

ACTIONS:

  1. Jenny & Sue to draft concerns re NP scope and education – issue/question guide.

Aim to discuss with NCNZ - ?invite Cath/Annette to a meeting; also through Sandra; informally with Frances Hughes & Sharon Brownie (new appointments to NCNZ).

Hear from Nicolette re meeting with ProCare.


Others

  1. National PDRP work has been taken over by HNZ

  2. Regulatory bill – do this govt have time to progress it into legislation before next election?

    1. Jenny doing an Op-Ed piece will circulate for comment.

    2. Need to align with medical colleagues who are challenging regulatory bill

  3. Ongoing concern re silence/silencing of nursing leadership

  4. New grads including blaming for situation as not “work ready”, removal of NEtP, RN scope inc differential diagnoses

  5. Lack of historical perspective; eg Carpenter report, apprenticeship models; prescribing (in other professions); individual blame rather than organisational view
