Nadine Gray (Te Whakatōhea) whanaungatanga from Ōpōtiki, in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. She is influenced by her whānau of nurses and teachers, including her mother, who was the first Māori Nurse Practitioner in Aotearoa, Janet Maloney-Moni.


Nadine prepared as a registered nurse from Wintec and completed a Bachelor of Nursing, a Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori (level 2) from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, a Master of Health Science (1st class honours) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science (Distinction) from Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland.


Nadine has worked in clinical practice and strategic leadership roles over twenty years. She has a deep commitment to advancing Māori health outcomes working as a Māori Clinical Nurse Specialist in Cancer Care at Capital & Coast DHB to support whānau Māori in cancer care pathways.  She has worked an adjunct teaching fellow at the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Practice at Victoria University of Wellington. Nadine recently worked as the Clinical Chief Advisor Nursing at Manatū Hauora, the Ministry of Health and a Principal Advisor Nursing at Te Aka Whai Ora, responsible for co-leading nursing workforce development in partnership with Te Whatu Ora. In 2023 she was appointed Chief Nursing Officer Te Aka Whai Ora, Māori Health Authority to provide a broad range of clinical advice and support across Te Aka Whai Ora. 


Nadine was appointed to her current role of National Chief Nursing Officer Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora ion 1 July 2024. Nadine seeks to work collectively to enable strategies that prioritise and lead the change towards future-focused models of wellbeing and growing the capacity and capability of advanced nursing practice. Her role is to provide strong professional leadership for valued nurses across the system, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality care. This includes developing and maintaining the nursing workforce as well as increasing the proportion of Māori and Pacific nurses. As a member of the National Clinical Leadership Team, Nadine will help ensure that clinical advice and expertise underpins our strategic decisions, especially for service design and delivery.
