Stephen Neville initially trained at Templeton Hospital as a psychopaedic nurse in the late 1970s. He completed his general and obstetric training at The Princess Margaret Hospital in Christchurch.


Post registration he worked as a registered nurse in acute surgical, operating room, mental health, intellectual disability and gerontology nursing.

In 1987, Stephen started working in nursing education first at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology then Otago Polytechnic. Stephen worked between clinical practice and education until 2002.


Over this time, he completed a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts [Hons] in Nursing and Doctor of Philosophy [PhD] Nursing through Massey University. He was appointed to Massey University from 2002 as Senior Lecturer and Director Postgraduate Nursing Programme and Associate Head of School from January 2014 to April 2015. During this time he was also involved in a range of research activity focusing initially on gerontology with a focus on the health and wellbeing of older people; particularly ensuring communities are safe and appropriate places for older adults to age in, challenging instances of ageism, stigmatisation and discrimination, reducing loneliness and social isolation and improving cognitive performance in older people.


From April 2015 to December 2023, Dr Stephen Neville was Professor and Head of Department [Nursing], Auckland University of Technology [AUT]. He was successful in securing research grants, his research platform focused on gerontology, age friendly communities, marginalised populations, men's health & health workforce development. The work on "Modified Pathways to Sustainable Ageing in Aotearoa," aims to reduce frailty in older populations, contributing to sustainable and healthy ageing. Dr Neville has a significant number of publications and conference presentations.

He is a Fellow & life member of the College of Nurses Aotearoa (NZ). He is Adjunct Professor of Nursing at Edith Cowan University, University of Canberra & Western Sydney University. Stephen is Editor, the Journal of Clinical Nursing & Ageing Well National Science Challenge Advisory Committee member. He has contributed as a member of the Age-friendly Advisory Board for the Office for Seniors, Ministry of Social Development.


Since January 2023, Dr Stephen Neville has worked as Professor of Nursing and Head of Domain - Nursing at Te Pūkenga. He is committed to advancing the health and wellbeing of our communities through strategic leadership, impactful research, and ensuring nursing graduates have the requisite skills and attributes to deliver quality care to consumers. Integral to his work is a focus on equity, inclusivity, honouring and upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and ensuring authentic and genuine engagement with key stakeholders.
