Dr Michal Boyd is a strong professional focused on Gerontology, Aged Residential Care, Primary Healthcare of Older People, Palliative Care of Frail Older People and Advanced Nursing Practice. She maintains a practice as a Nurse Practitioner for Older Adults specialising in dementia, frailty and palliative care for older people and the development of advanced nursing practice. She is an Associate Professor with the School of Nursing University of Auckland and collaborates with the Department of Geriatric Medicine.
Michal Boyd completed a Bachelor of Science: Biology & Secondary Ed at Brigham Young University 1984-1986. She then worked as a park ranger naturalist, biology secondary education teacher and research assistant while completing a Master of Science Mammalian Physiology 1987 to 1989. She decided on a career in nursing, completing a nursing programme at the University of Colorado Denver. She worked as a Nurse Care Manager at Boulder Community Hospital, Community Health, Boulder, Colorado which influenced her view of community-based care. She completed a Master of Science (Primary Healthcare Adults) before completing a nursing doctorate residency 1990-1994. She worked as an Adult Nurse Practitioner Internal Medicine Associates in Boulder, Colorado 1996 to 2000 and Assistant Professor with University of Colorado 1997 to 2002.
Dr Michal Boyd was recruited as Senior Lecturer at Auckland University of Technology, School of Nursing from 2002 to 2008 to work with the Nurse Practitioner programme. She was recruited as Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Director of the Community Nursing Programme in Older Adult Services at Waitemata District Health Board from 2004 to 2020 to lead the Gerontology Nurse Specialist and Nurse Practitioner career pathway.
Michal has a strong academic and research profile. She has participated in many clinically based research and evaluation studies. She has worked as Honorary Senior Research Fellow with University of Auckland, Freemasons' Department of Geriatric Medicine from 2008 to 2009; appointed as Senior Research Fellow University of Auckland, Freemasons Department of Geriatric Medicine from 2009 to 2012. She worked as Adjunct Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University, School of Nursing, Bathurst, Australia from 2012 – present. She also worked as Senior Lecturer from 2012-2016 and Associate Professor at University of Auckland, School of Nursing, Auckland, New Zealand from Dec 2016 – present.
Her main research interests are the proactive assessment and care coordination of complex older adults who live in the community and residential aged care facilities. She was primary investigator for End of Life, has investigated frailty and cognitive impairment management in primary care.
