Cheyne Chalmers is a registered nurse who completed her pre-registration nursing qualifications in the mid-1980’s in Auckland. After registration she worked in mental health at Kingseat Hospital before transferring at Green Lane Hospital in respiratory medicine, oncology, palliative care and otorhinolaryngology nursing. As a respiratory Nurse Specialist, she was part of the development of national respiratory nursing standards and involved in the development of post-graduate education for nurses including clinical and leadership pathways, mentoring leadership students at University of Auckland.


In early 2000 she participated in planning for service transfer to the Auckland Hospital Grafton campus leading the amalgamation of four large hospitals onto one site, in Auckland New Zealand – a significant change and leadership project. She then worked as nurse leader to set up ambulatory services on the Greenlane Clinical Centre (Cardiac HBO), responsible for the professional leadership of nursing within Greenlane Clinical Centre/Maungakiekie Campus.


Cheyne was appointed as Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Capital & Coast District Health Board from 2005 to 2009. She was appointed as the Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Support Services at Monash Health from 2009-2019. Monash Health is the largest health service in Victoria, Australia, employing over 6,000 nurses and midwives in more than forty locations across South-East Melbourne, tertiary hospital services at Monash Medical Centre to Clayton to small community health centres. At Monash Health, she has led the development of the Monash Health Nursing and Midwifery Strategy (2010-2013). She was also an Adjunct Professor at Deakin University from 2011, the largest provider of nursing graduates in Victoria. She was influential at a state and national level in Victoria, involved as a nurse leader on the Commonwealth review. She participated on the Victorian Hospitals Industrial Association Board of Directors and was the past Chair of the Nursing and Midwifery Ministerial Advisory Group in Victoria.


Cheyne completed post graduate education - Masters (Health Services Management) at Massey University 1999-2005. She then completed a Leadership programme at the Melbourne Business School from November 2019 to July 2021.

Cheyne Chalmers was appointed as Chief Operations Officer at Ryman Healthcare in New Zealand from October 2019 to 2022, assuming responsibility for the clinical care and overall wellbeing of Ryman's 11,200 residents across forty-five retirement villages in New Zealand. Cheyne Chalmers was appointed as Chief Executive Officer Zealand at Ryman Healthcare in 2022 to 2024 based in Christchurch, Canterbury.

Cheyne has been a member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand from 2021. Has been a Board Director of the Victoria Hospitals Industrial Association since 2014. Is a fellow of the Australian College of Nursing since 2011.
